Amazon has entered into a partnership with Circu Li-ion, a startup based in Germany and Luxembourg, to improve the lifespan of batteries used in logistics operations. This collaboration is part of Amazon’s Sustainability Accelerator program, which aims to support innovations that reduce environmental impact.
Circu Li-ion has developed an automated process for disassembling batteries and evaluating individual cells for potential reuse or recycling. This technology is expected to enhance the repurposing of electric vehicle batteries, potentially reducing the demand for new battery production in Amazon’s operations.
The CEO and co-founder of Circu Li-ion, Antoine Welter, stated that the company’s goal is to repurpose three billion batteries by 2040. Amazon’s Sustainability Accelerator program is providing financial support and industry expertise to help Circu Li-ion and other sustainable startups scale their innovations.
A pilot phase is scheduled to commence after September 2024, during which Circu Li-ion will expand its technology implementation in Germany. Over a six-month period, the two companies will process batteries from Amazon’s delivery network using Circu Li-ion’s technology, aiming to achieve more efficient recycling and higher rates of waste reduction and material reuse.
This initiative is designed to not only reduce Amazon’s reliance on new batteries but also to serve as a potential model for other companies seeking to electrify their logistics operations. Circu Li-ion currently operates from facilities in Karlsruhe, Germany, and Foetz, Luxembourg.
Justine Mahler, Sustainability Director at Amazon, highlighted the program’s importance in supporting innovation and promoting sustainable practices across the industry. The initiative involves testing new technologies under real-world conditions to reduce environmental impact and establish more sustainable operational standards.
Since its launch in 2022, the Amazon Sustainability Accelerator has provided support to over 40 startups in the UK and Europe. The program has distributed more than €1 million in grants and loans, contributing to an average revenue increase of 700% among participating companies. Collectively, these startups have raised over €18.7 million in funding to date.
