The China All-Solid-State Battery Collaborative Innovation Platform (CASIP), a government-led consortium, has brought together China’s battery and automotive industries to accelerate the development and commercialization of solid-state batteries with the goal of creating a competitive production framework by 2030.

Launched in January, CASIP encompasses an impressive array of industry leaders, including eminent battery manufacturers CATL, CALB, EVE Energy, SVOLT, Gotion High-Tech, and the BYD battery arm, FinDreams Battery. This initiative also integrates several major state-owned and private automotive entities, notably BYD and Nio, along with a diverse range of stakeholders from governmental bodies and the academic sphere.

The consortium enjoys the support of key Chinese ministries such as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC), and the National Energy Administration, as well as research support from institutions such as the Chinese Academy of Sciences and significant government funding.

Professor Ouyang Minggao of Tsinghua University emphasized the revolutionary potential of all-solid-state battery technology and the critical role of artificial intelligence in accelerating the R&D process during the CASIP’s launch event in January. In addition to protecting China’s leading position in the field of electric vehicle batteries from future technological advances, the goal of this endeavor is to promote innovation in fundamental research, important technologies, and the joint development and production of solid-state battery-equipped electric vehicles.

The consortium was formed as a strategic response to international advances in solid-state battery technology, as China seeks to maintain its leadership position in the face of potential disruptions from competitors such as Toyota and Nissan, both of which plan to launch solid-state battery electric vehicles by the end of this decade. CASIP is poised to lead China’s efforts to define the next generation of battery technology and ensure its dominance in the evolving energy landscape by fostering collaboration among industry leaders.
