Company Overview

Northern Lithium Ltd, founded in 2017 and headquartered in Stanhope, United Kingdom, is a privately owned mineral exploration and development company. The company focuses on upstream lithium extraction from subsurface saline brines in the Northern Pennine Orefield. Its stated mission is to establish a secure domestic supply of battery-grade lithium to support the UK’s transition to low-emission transport and energy storage, using methods intended to reduce environmental impact and align with national critical minerals priorities.

Battery Technology

Northern Lithium’s core process centers on Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) applied to deep brines, combining membrane filtration and ion-exchange techniques. The company has tested modular DLE units in partnership with membrane specialist Evove and water-treatment firm Kurita, achieving high lithium recovery rates in pilot campaigns. Trial results cited recovery above 90% and battery-grade carbonate purity in the high 90s. DLE offers lower water use, smaller surface footprint and reduced carbon intensity versus salar evaporation or conventional hard-rock routes, and supports phased scaling from pilot to commercial modules.

Products

Products are battery-grade lithium carbonate and lithium hydroxide suitable for lithium-ion cell manufacture. Reported product purities exceed conventional benchmarks, targeting cell-makers and battery integrators for electric vehicles, grid-scale energy storage and related defense or industrial applications. The modular production approach is intended to offer scalable supply to UK and European battery supply chains with lower water use and reduced lifecycle emissions compared with some alternative sources.

Recent Projects

In 2025 Northern Lithium completed pilot DLE demonstration trials at Ludwell Farm, processing more than 3.5 million liters of brine over a 60-day campaign with reported recovery around 92% and product purity near 96.5%. The company has feasibility funding from UK Research and Innovation’s Automotive Transformation Fund and announced partnerships with Evove and Kurita to progress commercial UK lithium production, targeting an initial commercial plant and staged capacity expansion toward 2027.

Investors

Northern Lithium is backed by private investors and has received UKRI Automotive Transformation Fund grant support. The company completed fundraising rounds in 2024–2025 (circa £6 million reported) to support pilot scale-up, technology validation and early plant construction, and maintains strategic partnerships for implementation.
