The DOEN Foundation (Stichting DOEN) is a Dutch foundation and impact investor based in Amsterdam. Funded by proceeds from the Nationale Postcode Loterij and VriendenLoterij, it supports early-stage innovators and entrepreneurs through grants, equity investments, and loans. The foundation aims to accelerate the shift toward a circular economy, foster social inclusion, and create space for imaginative solutions. Each year, DOEN offers pioneers a chance to scale ideas that benefit communities and the environment, inspiring others by demonstrating that systemic change can be both practical and inclusive.
DOEN operates two investment branches: DOEN Participaties and DOEN Ventures. Together they manage an impact portfolio of about €150 million, focusing on startups that align environmental and social goals with financial sustainability. Instruments include convertible loans and minority equity stakes, allowing the foundation to support ventures through critical growth stages. Priority sectors include sustainable food systems, circular economy models, social entrepreneurship, and creative cultural projects. DOEN’s willingness to invest at an earlier stage and assume greater risk distinguishes its approach from more traditional capital providers. Their mandate emphasizes regenerative economic practices that contribute to global sustainability goals.
Clean technology is a core part of DOEN’s strategy, with a clear interest in energy storage and battery solutions. The foundation has backed initiatives such as Vittoria Technology, which deploys second-life lithium-ion battery systems across Sub-Saharan Africa, and various solar energy enterprises including SolarNow, BBOXX, and SunFunder. Support for circular business models also extends to companies like NEFFA, which develops sustainable materials for fashion and interiors. By combining capital with strategic advice and a network of impact-driven partners, DOEN helps accelerate the development and deployment of technologies that underpin a more sustainable energy future.
