Company Overview

Volterion GmbH & Co. KG, established in 2015 as a spin-off from the Fraunhofer Institute UMSICHT, specializes in developing and manufacturing advanced redox-flow batteries and stack modules for commercial bulk energy storage. Based in Dortmund, Germany, the company is an innovator in sustainable flow battery technology, serving applications such as peak shaving, EV charging, power reserve markets and renewable energy storage.

Battery Technology

Volterion’s core technology is vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFBs) featuring non-flammable components and over 20,000 charge cycles. Its patented weldable bipolar-graphite-electrode manufacturing process reduces stack costs by 70% and system costs by 50%. The fully automated high-throughput production ensures efficiency and recyclability, with independent scaling of power and capacity in its stack modules.

Products

powerRFB product line: scalable, modular VRFB systems in compact casings, non-flammable, >20,000 cycle life, independent power and capacity scaling, designed for industrial grid stabilization and wholesale optimization.

Recent Projects

Pilot projects at RWE facilities in Essen focused on grid stabilization and wholesale optimization.

Investors

Volterion is backed by High-Tech Gründerfonds and Fraunhofer Venture. In 2019, Boysen Group acquired a majority stake.
