Gotion High-Tech, the Chinese battery cell manufacturer and key partner of Volkswagen, has approved substantial investments totaling €2.5 billion for two new battery production facilities in Morocco and Slovakia. Both sites are planned to have an annual output of 20 GWh each, supporting the growing global demand for electric vehicle battery cells.

In Morocco, Gotion aims to establish a fully owned subsidiary, Gotion Power Morocco, to lead the development of the new plant in the Rabat region. The project, valued at around €1.28 billion, involves collaboration with the state financial institution CDG Group. A construction timeline has not yet been released.

Simultaneously, Gotion has formed a joint venture in Slovakia with local manufacturer InoBat. With Gotion holding an 80% stake and InoBat 20%, the partnership plans to invest €1.23 billion to build a facility in Šurany, situated in the country’s southern region. The initial phase is expected to be operational by 2026, with further expansions under consideration.

Gotion’s focus on LFP and LMFP cell technologies positions it as a rising industry player. Although it does not yet rival top global producers like CATL or BYD, it currently ranks eighth worldwide, capturing a market share of 2.6% in the EV battery segment. Volkswagen owns 25.6% of Gotion’s shares, potentially benefiting from the company’s growing production capacity beyond China.

Following these investments, Gotion’s global reach now extends into both North Africa and Central Europe. Future expansions at both sites may increase combined annual capacities from 20 GWh to as much as 60 GWh in Slovakia and up to 100 GWh in Morocco, reflecting the company’s ambition to scale up and meet international market demands.
