Lifthium Energy is a sustainable lithium refining company established by Bondalti, the largest chlorine producer in the Iberian region, and the José de Mello Group, a prominent Portuguese business conglomerate. The company focuses on producing high-quality lithium hydroxide through environmentally responsible methods, aiming to reduce carbon emissions in the refining process by over 50% by 2030. Using advanced electrolysis technology and renewable energy sources, including green hydrogen, Lifthium Energy serves the growing electric vehicle battery market while maintaining strict Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) standards.

Battery Technology

Lifthium Energy’s technical approach centers on innovative lithium refining processes that combine electrolysis and pyro/hydro metallurgical technologies. The company’s refined lithium hydroxide is specifically designed for traction batteries in electric vehicles, meeting the stringent requirements of battery manufacturers. Their process utilizes NORSCAND® Lithium Chloride Electrolysis technology, developed in partnership with NORAM Electrolysis Systems, which has been validated for commercial-scale production.

The company’s refining method stands out for its environmental efficiency, powered entirely by renewable energy sources. This approach significantly reduces the carbon footprint compared to traditional refining methods. The refined lithium hydroxide meets the exact specifications required for modern electric vehicle batteries, ensuring optimal performance and longevity. As a member of the European consortium IPCEI EuBaTin (European Battery Innovation), Lifthium Energy actively contributes to advancing sustainable battery material production in Europe.

Recent Projects

By 2030, Lifthium Energy plans to establish two lithium refineries in the Iberian Peninsula – one in northern Portugal and another in Spain. These facilities will produce sufficient lithium hydroxide to support battery production for approximately one million electric vehicles annually. In 2024, the company secured €21 million in financing from PERTE VEC for its Torrelavega plant in Spain, marking significant progress toward establishing a European lithium processing hub.

Investors

Lifthium Energy operates under the full ownership of Bondalti and the José de Mello Group. While no additional investors are currently disclosed, the company’s leadership has indicated plans to seek strategic partners for future expansion, particularly for large-scale lithium treatment facilities.
