On January 23, 2025, SES AI Corporation, a global innovator in AI-enhanced high-performance lithium-metal (Li-Metal) and lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, announced the signing of contracts totaling up to $10 million with two major global automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). These contracts aim to apply artificial intelligence for scientific discovery in developing new electrolyte materials for Li-Metal and Li-ion batteries used in automotive applications.
The agreements represent a significant milestone in the commercial application of AI for battery material discovery. The revenue from these contracts is expected to be partially recognized in the fourth quarter of 2024, with the remaining balance anticipated through the first half of 2025. This development follows SES AI’s recent achievement of creating the world’s first battery using an electrolyte material discovered through its Molecular Universe program for drones and robotics applications.
Founder and CEO Qichao Hu commented, “These new contracts with our automotive OEM partners involve applying our AI-discovered electrolytes to Li-Metal B-sample developments and, for the first time, to mature Li-ion batteries already in commercial use. We believe this new revenue stream and these contracts validate and accelerate the commercial use of AI for Science in battery material discovery for automotive applications. We will work closely with our partners and others in the industry to extend our early leadership in this new opportunity.”
SES AI Corporation, founded in 2012 and headquartered in Boston, specializes in the development and manufacturing of advanced Li-Metal batteries. The company leverages superintelligent AI across all aspects of its business, including research and development, materials sourcing, cell design, engineering and manufacturing, and battery health and safety monitoring.
