SK Enmove, a subsidiary of SK Innovation, has signed a supply agreement with Chilean mining company SQM to secure a stable source of iodine for the production of advanced automotive refrigerants. The partnership aims to strengthen SK Enmove’s position in the global refrigerant market while supporting the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly cooling solutions for vehicles.
Key points of the agreement include:
- SQM, the world’s largest iodine producer, will supply iodine to SK Enmove
- The agreement supports SK Enmove’s goal of developing high-performance, next-generation automotive refrigerants
- SQM’s commitment to sustainable mining practices aligns with SK Enmove’s focus on environmental responsibility
This partnership comes as the automotive industry seeks alternatives to traditional refrigerants due to environmental concerns. SK Enmove’s new refrigerants, developed in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Group, have shown improved efficiency in electric vehicle air conditioning systems while reducing energy consumption.
The agreement was signed by SK Enmove CEO Kim Wone-kee and SQM-Iodine Plant Nutrition Division CEO Pablo Altimiras on October 1, 2024, in Santiago, Chile. Both companies expressed optimism about the partnership’s potential to drive innovation in the automotive refrigerant sector.
