Toyota has inaugurated its new battery manufacturing plant in North Carolina, marking a significant expansion in the company’s electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure. The Toyota Battery Manufacturing North Carolina (TBMNC) facility, Toyota’s first in-house battery plant outside of Japan, represents a nearly $14 billion investment and is poised to begin shipping batteries for North American electrified vehicles in April 2025.
As Toyota’s 11th manufacturing plant in the United States, TBMNC will produce batteries for hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The facility is expected to generate approximately 5,000 jobs, contributing to the local economy and supporting Toyota’s broader “best-in-town” strategy. This approach emphasizes local investment, community engagement, and the development of products tailored to regional needs through a multi-pathway strategy.
Toyota’s total investment in the U.S. has reached $49 billion, supporting over 280,000 jobs across the industry. With TBMNC, Toyota aims to enhance its manufacturing capabilities and meet the growing demand for electrified vehicles in North America. The plant is a crucial component of Toyota’s efforts to advance its electric mobility solutions and reinforce its presence in the U.S. market.
TBMNC was established in November 2021 and is led by Plant President Sean Suggs. The ownership structure includes Toyota Motor North America, Inc. (TMNA) with a 90% stake and Toyota Tsusho with a 10% stake. The facility’s operations are expected to focus on the manufacture of automotive batteries, integrating advanced technologies to ensure high-quality production and efficiency.
