24M Technologies has achieved a major milestone in the development of safer electric vehicle (EV) batteries, shipping commercial-sized lithium metal battery cells integrated with its innovative Impervio separator and Eternalyte electrolyte to a leading global automotive original equipment manufacturer (OEM). This breakthrough brings the industry closer to large-scale production of more reliable and secure EV batteries.
According to Naoki Ota, CEO and President of 24M Technologies, “Addressing growing concerns around battery fire safety is crucial for widespread EV adoption and a more sustainable energy future.” The shipment of Impervio enabled battery cells marks a significant first step in restoring consumer confidence in the safety, longevity, and efficiency of EV batteries.
24M’s Impervio technology prevents battery fires by obstructing dendrite propagation at the individual electrode level, enabling early fault detection and preventing thermal runaway through real-time electrochemistry monitoring. The separator is designed to be versatile, compatible with all battery formats, and easily integratable into existing manufacturing processes. This allows OEMs to test and deploy the technology rapidly without significant production line overhauls, whether using conventional methods or the 24M SemiSolid process.
24M is at the forefront of overcoming key barriers to widespread EV adoption. By combining innovations like Eternalyte, 24M ETOP, and Liforever, the company enables the development of EVs with up to 1,000 miles (ca. 1,600 km) of range and 100% recyclable batteries.
