24M Technologies, Inc. has announced the expansion of its Eternalyte™ electrolyte portfolio, aimed at enhancing the charge rate and cold temperature performance of contemporary batteries. Initially introduced in February 2024 for lithium metal batteries, the upgraded Eternalyte™ offering is now optimized for silicon and graphite-based batteries. This makes it suitable for applications that demand high power, low-temperature performance, rapid charging, and extended battery longevity.

The Eternalyte™ electrolyte provides several key advantages. It supports fast charge rates, enabling electric vehicles (EVs) to add approximately 200 miles of range in under four minutes when charging from 15% to 80% state of charge (SOC). The electrolyte also boasts high rate capability, up to three times the ionic conductivity (~26 mS/cm at 25°C and ~0.6 Li+ transference number) compared to standard electrolytes. This enhancement improves rate performance without affecting energy density, regardless of the battery chemistry.

In terms of low-temperature performance, Eternalyte™ maintains over 80% of a cell’s capacity at a 1C rate and -20°C. In contrast, cells with conventional electrolytes typically lose more than 80% of their capacity under similar conditions. This improvement ensures that EVs equipped with Eternalyte™ experience minimal to no range reduction in cold weather, unlike those using standard electrolytes, which can suffer a 20-30% capacity loss.

Eternalyte™ is designed for easy implementation, with viscosity levels compatible with existing manufacturing equipment, allowing seamless integration into current production processes. Additionally, the electrolyte enhances battery safety, demonstrating strong performance in Li-metal cells and other chemistries during USABC and other abuse tests.

When combined with 24M’s Impervio™ separator, Eternalyte™ offers further safety and performance benefits. This combination reduces the growth of lithium dendrites (plating) during rapid or low-temperature charging, lowering the risk of thermal runaway events or fires. This improvement enhances overall battery safety and decreases the likelihood of product or vehicle recalls due to internal short circuits, even when using high energy density chemistries.

“Originally designed for lithium metal batteries, we quickly realized that the transformative nature of Eternalyte has far reaching benefits for all types of batteries,” said Naoki Ota, 24M CEO. “We are excited to introduce the expanded Eternalyte family, one of the few chemistry innovations that can be implemented immediately to radically improve performance of today’s batteries.”

Ota added, “At 24M, we continue to innovate and offer the battery industry and end users the most advanced battery technologies available. Now, with the combination of Eternalyte and Impervio, we improve the safety and performance of batteries, enhance consumer experiences and open new markets for electrically powered products.”
