American Battery Factory (ABF), established in 2021, is a U.S.-based manufacturer focused on producing Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery cells. The company aims to create a sustainable domestic supply chain for advanced battery production in the United States. ABF specializes in developing safe, long-lasting, and environmentally responsible energy storage solutions for various applications, including residential power, commercial equipment, and national defense requirements. Through strategic partnerships and innovative manufacturing processes, ABF is working to strengthen U.S. energy independence while creating substantial employment opportunities across their planned manufacturing facilities.

Battery Technology

ABF’s primary focus is the production of LFP battery cells, which offer exceptional safety features and extended lifespan capabilities of up to 10,000 cycles or 20-30 years. The company utilizes advanced Z-folding structures in their cell design, enhancing power density and charging efficiency. Their manufacturing process incorporates fully automated production lines, featuring sophisticated slurry systems and cathode/anode laser chambers.

The company is also advancing research into Lithium Manganese Iron Phosphate (LMFP) technology, which provides approximately 20% more energy density compared to traditional LFP cells. ABF’s battery solutions serve multiple sectors, including:

  • Portable solar generators
  • Grid-scale energy storage systems
  • Data center backup power
  • Telecommunications infrastructure
  • Agricultural and commercial equipment
  • Specialized defense applications

Recent Projects

In October 2023, ABF initiated construction of their first gigafactory in Tucson, Arizona. This $1.2 billion facility will house the company’s global headquarters, research and development center, and a 2 x 2 GWh factory module. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2026 and will create approximately 1,000 jobs.

ABF has also established a significant partnership with KAN Battery Co., Ltd., utilizing a 1 GWh factory line in China for high-capacity prismatic cell production while their domestic facilities are under development.

Investors

ABF’s funding structure includes several notable investors:

  • Lion Energy: Initial incubator and Series A investor with an 18 GWh battery cell offtake agreement
  • FNA Group: Series A investor providing manufacturing technology support
  • Additional investment from an undisclosed battery-cell equipment manufacturing company
  • Strategic partnership with Honeywell for automation and digitalization technologies
