Amprius Technologies, Inc., a specialist in next-generation lithium-ion batteries utilizing its Silicon Anode Platform, has introduced a new SiCore™ cell within its expanding SiCore product platform. Designed to enhance high-performance electric mobility applications, the cell employs a proprietary silicon anode material system to deliver exceptional energy and power performance in a single unit.

The new SiCore cell features an energy density of 370 Wh/kg, increasing runtimes for various applications. Simultaneously, it delivers high power performance exceeding 3,000 W/kg and supports high discharge rates up to 10C without cooling and 15C with active cooling. This design facilitates rapid power delivery without compromising runtime, setting new benchmarks for demanding applications. The cell is particularly suitable for aviation purposes, including drones, and high-performance electric vehicles that require both endurance and swift energy delivery.

Companies like Teledyne FLIR, a leading provider of unmanned solutions for military and public safety sectors, are assessing the SiCore cell’s capabilities. Tung Ng, Vice President of Unmanned Systems North America at Teledyne FLIR, remarked, “Amprius’ new SiCore cell is positioned to deliver a transformative boost in power and energy for our unmanned aerial systems, extending mission durations while maintaining critical performance under demanding conditions. We are eager to evaluate how this breakthrough technology can meet the rigorous needs of our defense, security, and industrial customers, enabling longer runtimes and increasing operational flexibility.”

According to Dr. Ionel Stefan, Chief Technology Officer of Amprius Technologies, the SiCore cell represents a significant technical advancement. “By optimizing the silicon anode composition without compromising other performance metrics, we have redefined the trade-off between power and energy,” he said. “This cell is not just about performance but about creating new power possibilities for high-demand applications.”

Amprius Technologies’ CEO, Dr. Kang Sun, highlighted that the SiCore platform has reached a new performance level. “With its unparalleled power-to-energy performance and adaptability across industries such as advanced air mobility, drones, electric vehicles, and light electric vehicles, the new SiCore cell offers our customers more design options and capabilities,” Dr. Sun explained. “It is expected to enable our customers to achieve superior range, speed, and reliability. This advanced power delivery is especially critical for applications like eVTOL aircraft, where high power is essential for takeoff and landing, and high energy ensures extended flight times and longer ranges.”

In the fourth quarter of 2024, Amprius provided pre-production 10Ah samples of the new SiCore cell to six customers for real-world testing in challenging environments. This early access aims to ensure the cell meets industry standards before its planned commercialization in the first quarter of 2025.

Amprius Technologies is headquartered in Fremont, California, where it operates a research and development lab and a manufacturing facility for silicon anodes and cells. The company’s commercially available SiMaxx™ batteries deliver up to 450 Wh/kg and 1,150 Wh/L, with third-party validation confirming 500 Wh/kg and 1,300 Wh/L. The introduction of the SiCore™ platform in 2024 has significantly expanded its ability to serve a broader range of customer applications.
