Volkswagen subsidiary PowerCo is currently constructing a battery cell factory in Salzgitter, Germany. Austrian company AVL has announced it will provide a battery testing laboratory for the site, expected to be completed by 2025. This collaboration marks another milestone in the ongoing partnership between PowerCo and AVL, who have been working together on battery cell testing initiatives.
Urs Gerspach, Managing Director of the Instrumentation and Test Systems division at AVL, commented on the contract: “We were in tough competition with large, globally active companies. For AVL, this project is another milestone in the field of test systems for battery development. I also see it as confirmation that we are on the right track in the transformation from the combustion engine to hybridization and electrification.”
PowerCo’s battery cell factory in Salzgitter was originally planned with an annual capacity of 40 gigawatt-hours but may now be smaller than initially intended. Simultaneously, PowerCo is developing similar factories in Valencia, Spain, and Ontario, Canada.
