BTR New Material Group Co., Ltd. has commenced operations at its new lithium-ion battery anode materials plant in Kendal, Indonesia. Inaugurated on August 7, 2024, this plant is now the largest anode production site outside of China.
The opening ceremony was attended by Indonesian President Joko Widodo, several government ministers, and BTR’s executive leadership. The event coincided with BTR’s 24th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in the company’s expansion.
The project’s initial phase, representing a $478 million investment, has established an annual production capacity of 80,000 tons of anode materials. A second phase, planned for late 2024 with an additional $299 million investment, will increase the total capacity to 160,000 tons.
BTR, which has held the top global market share for anode materials for 14 years, supplies major lithium-ion battery manufacturers worldwide. The Indonesian facility will produce various anode materials for electric vehicles, consumer electronics, and energy storage systems.
This expansion is part of BTR’s global strategy, which includes production facilities in Indonesia and Morocco. The Indonesian plant represents the first international expansion for China’s anode material industry and aims to strengthen BTR’s supply chain and global market presence.
The project has created 4,000 jobs during construction and will provide an additional 1,200 permanent positions. It addresses supply gaps in Indonesia and the ASEAN region’s lithium-ion battery industry.
BTR is implementing sustainability measures in its operations. The Morowali Industrial Park will complete a 10+ MWh photovoltaic power plant this year, while the Kendal Industrial Park will operate entirely on renewable energy.
As a leader in renewable energy material R&D, BTR continues to develop its product portfolio, serving international and domestic markets with advanced lithium-ion battery components and materials.
