Bühler Group’s Grinding & Dispersing division has been awarded a significant contract by FIB S.p.A., a subsidiary of Seri Industrial S.p.A., to provide cutting-edge equipment for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery production at the Teverola 2 plant near Naples, Italy. The plant is designed with an annual production capacity of 8 gigawatt hours (GWh), marking a major advancement in Europe’s battery manufacturing sector.

The new installation involves the delivery of four continuous mixing lines for electrode slurry production, scheduled for installation by the end of 2025, with production operations commencing in 2026. Building on the successful pilot project at Teverola 1, where Bühler supplied an electrode slurry production system capable of producing 0.35 GWh/year of lithium-ion components, the collaboration between Bühler and FIB has now expanded to meet larger production needs.

At Teverola 2, Bühler will supply two continuous mixing lines each for anode and cathode electrode slurry production. These systems feature co-rotating twin-screw extruder technology that streamlines several processes into one continuous operation. This technology not only enhances throughput but also reduces energy consumption and minimizes the need for manual labor compared to traditional batch mixing methods.

Additionally, the integrated QuaLiB in-line quality control system utilizes advanced sensors, data analytics, and automation to ensure precise monitoring and lower production scrap rates, which in turn decreases operational costs for FIB. The adoption of this technology is expected to significantly improve production efficiency and sustainability within the facility.

Andrea Civitillo, co-founder and Managing Director at Seri Industrial S.p.A. and FIB S.p.A., noted that Bühler’s advanced continuous mixing technology and proven expertise at the pilot facility made them the ideal partner for the Teverola 2 project. He emphasized that the efficient, scalable, and sustainable solutions provided by Bühler align well with the company’s goals in the renewable energy and electric mobility markets.

Adrian Spillmann, Head of Market Segment Battery Electrode Compounds at Bühler, highlighted the broader implications of the partnership, stating that it reflects a shared commitment to innovation and sustainability in the energy sector. The collaboration is poised to significantly enhance Europe’s capacity to produce high-performance LFP batteries, further strengthening the region’s position in the rapidly growing battery market.
