Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) has announced plans to build a network of 10,000 battery swap stations. This announcement marks the first time the company has disclosed specific goals for this business segment.
At the 2024 World Power Battery Conference in Yibin, Sichuan Province, CATL’s Chief Technology Officer, Gao Huan, unveiled the company’s strategic roadmap. The plan outlines short-term goals of installing over 500 stations by 2025, increasing to 3,000 stations by 2027, with an ultimate goal of 10,000 stations.
CATL’s EVOGO battery swapping brand, which will be launched in January 2022, is an integral part of this expansion strategy. The company plans to expand its network to 30 cities with more than 500 stations by 2025 and to more than 70 cities with 1,500 stations by 2026.
The EVOGO system uses Choco-SEB (swapping electric block) battery blocks, allowing vehicles to adjust their range capabilities by using one or more blocks. CATL has stated that this service will be available to all automakers, with the goal of building the world’s largest battery swapping service network within two to three years.
Currently, EVOGO services are operational in several Chinese cities, including Xiamen, Fuzhou, Guiyang and Hefei. Xiamen currently hosts the highest number of CATL battery swap stations with 12.
This initiative positions CATL as a significant competitor in the battery swap market, where Nio currently operates the largest network in China with 2,500 stations as of September 1, 2024.
