Bpifrance is the French public investment bank created in 2012 as a partnership between the Caisse des dépôts et consignations and EPIC Bpifrance Group. Under direct supervision of the European Central Bank since 2014, it supports entrepreneurs across France through financing, innovation, investment and international expansion. With a network of more than 50 regional offices and 1,200 employees, Bpifrance provides guidance and capital to small and mid-sized companies as well as high-growth startups.
The institution offers a range of financial solutions covering venture capital, credit facilities, equity investments, grants and fund-of-funds programmes. Its €1 billion large venture fund has backed 34 companies, including 18 publicly listed firms, while specialised biotech and medtech funds manage more than €150 million for early to mid-stage life science ventures. Since 2012, Bpifrance’s clean tech, smart city and impact funds have mobilised nearly €300 million, co-investing alongside private partners in Series A to C rounds for sustainable energy, circular economy and urban services projects.
Investment in ecological and energy transition totals over €7.6 billion since 2020, with support ranging from renewable energy to advanced mobility. Notable contributions include backing Automotive Cells Company under Europe’s IPCEI programme, a USD 100 million stake increase in Technip Energies, and participation in a €120 million round for Elyse Energy’s sustainable aviation fuel platform. In collaboration with the European Investment Bank, Bpifrance has also joined a €500 million financing initiative for solar and wind projects across France and Europe.
