GM Ventures is the venture capital arm of General Motors, launched in 2010 to support startups that match GM’s vision for an all-electric future with safety improvements and reduced congestion. As a wholly owned subsidiary, it invests in technologies that advance zero emissions, zero crashes, and zero congestion. By combining financial backing with GM’s engineering expertise and global manufacturing capabilities, GM Ventures aims to help young companies refine and scale solutions for tomorrow’s transportation needs.
Investment areas center on four pillars. In the electrification ecosystem, GM Ventures backs battery chemistry, motors, power electronics, charging infrastructure, and hydrogen systems. For smart vehicles, it seeks startups developing software services, human-machine interfaces, personalization features, advanced driver assistance, and autonomous driving systems. The advanced design & manufacturing pillar focuses on sustainable materials, smart factory processes, and modular production techniques. The resilient enterprise category covers digital tools, circular supply chain models, machine learning tools, and new service business models.
Recent investments highlight a focus on battery and clean energy innovations. In April 2023, GM Ventures led a $50 million Series B round for EnergyX to improve direct lithium extraction and support solid state battery research. In July 2024, the firm contributed $39 million to Addionics for its 3D current collector design that boosts battery performance and reduces cost. Other notable deals include a $10 million investment in Forge Nano’s thin film coatings for longer lasting cell performance and a $44 million round for Nanoramic’s ultracapacitor and electrode technologies for grid and automotive storage. Partnerships with companies such as Proterra and Niron Magnets further support sustainable motor components and electric bus systems.
