CustomCells, a German battery cell manufacturer, is set to establish a pilot production line for next-generation round cells at its Tübingen facility. This initiative is part of Baden-Württemberg’s “Innovation and Future Agenda” and has secured eight million euros in funding from the state. The project involves scientific collaboration with the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Württemberg (ZSW), the Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (Fraunhofer IPA), and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).

Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut, Minister of Economic Affairs, emphasized the project’s importance, stating that it highlights Baden-Württemberg’s supportive environment for innovative companies and reinforces the state’s competitive edge in battery technology. The “Roundabout” research project aims to develop expertise in next-generation round cells, thereby enhancing the state’s battery ecosystem.

The pilot production will focus on large-format round cells with a diameter of 46 mm, known for their durable design, efficient heat dissipation, and high energy density. These characteristics make the round cells versatile for various applications, including agricultural technology, premium automotive engineering, motorsports, e-aviation, defense technology, and heavy-duty operations such as mining and maritime tasks.

Science Minister Petra Olschowski underscored the role of research and innovation in driving future advancements and maintaining Baden-Württemberg’s economic strength and quality of life. She highlighted the significance of supporting successful research and development initiatives to ensure the state remains a thriving hub for science and technology.

“We are using the innovative power of Baden-Württemberg – and strengthening it enormously with this project,” says Dr. Christoph Falk, COO of CustomCells. “Our round cell technology enables high-performance batteries for applications that place the highest demands on quality, safety and performance. The fact that such a key technology is being developed in Germany is a strong signal for the country as a business location – especially in terms of sustainability and the use of clean energy“.

“With this project, CustomCells is positioning itself as one of the few European players in a strategically important segment of battery technology,” says Falk: “Research and production in Baden-Württemberg not only secure technological leadership, but also industrial value creation in Germany.”

By focusing on the development and production of high-density round cells, CustomCells positions itself as a key player in Europe’s battery technology landscape. The project supports technological innovation and industrial growth, contributing to the overall advancement of the battery industry in Germany.
