E3 Lithium Ltd. and Pure Lithium Corporation have successfully produced lithium metal batteries using Alberta brines, marking a significant advancement in battery technology. Announced on March 13, 2025, this achievement is part of a Joint Development Agreement between the two companies, leveraging E3 Lithium’s direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology and Pure Lithium’s proprietary Brine to Battery™ technology.

The collaborative effort focused on integrating E3 Lithium’s concentrate production process with Pure Lithium’s innovative battery technology to create high-quality lithium metal batteries. Various lithium chloride concentrates, derived from different stages of E3 Lithium’s production flow sheet, were electrodeposited into lithium metal. These samples were then evaluated for consistency and purity before being assembled into battery cells to assess performance. Through this process, the companies identified an optimized lithium chloride concentrate with ideal lithium concentration and impurity levels. To date, E3 Lithium and Pure Lithium have manufactured over 80 lithium metal battery cells using E3’s lithium concentrate.

Pure Lithium has conducted rigorous testing of the batteries using industry-standard metrics to evaluate cell performance. The results of these tests will be shared once the comprehensive testing and analysis are complete, expected in the second quarter of 2025.

“The production of lithium metal batteries from E3’s Alberta brine marks a significant milestone and outlines our ability to produce multiple battery grade lithium products,” said Chris Doornbos, President and CEO of E3 Lithium. “The successful integration of E3’s lithium brine resource and DLE technology with Pure Lithium’s innovative technology demonstrates our commitment to developing a secure, reliable, and local lithium battery supply chain.”

“The expertise of E3 Lithium’s team, along with their extensive brine resources, has been crucial in advancing our Brine to Battery™ technology for the production of lithium metal anodes,” said Emilie Bodoin, Founder, Chairman & CEO of Pure Lithium. “We are confident in our strong partnership with E3 and our shared ability to achieve large-scale lithium metal anode production at a fraction of current commercial costs.”

In addition to the battery production announcement, E3 Lithium disclosed the issuance of an additional 300,000 restricted share units (RSUs) to the company’s CEO, which will vest over three years. This move follows the previously announced Equity Awards Grant and Option Repricing.

E3 Lithium holds significant lithium resources in Alberta and Saskatchewan, aiming to produce high-purity, battery-grade lithium products to support the growing demand in the electric vehicle and energy storage markets. The companies anticipate completing the battery testing program by the second quarter of 2025.
