Echion Technologies, established in 2017 as a spin-off from Cambridge University, specializes in developing and manufacturing niobium-based anode materials for lithium-ion batteries. The company’s main product, XNO® technology, represents a significant advancement in battery materials, enabling rapid charging capabilities while maintaining exceptional durability and performance. With its headquarters in Sawston, Cambridge, Echion Technologies has positioned itself as a leading supplier of advanced battery materials, serving various industrial applications including rail transport, off-road vehicles, and mining equipment.
Battery Technology
The company’s flagship XNO® anode material introduces several technical advantages to lithium-ion batteries. This niobium-based technology allows batteries to achieve full charge in under 10 minutes while delivering high energy density across various temperature conditions. The material’s structure enables batteries to maintain performance through more than 10,000 charge cycles, significantly extending operational lifespan compared to conventional alternatives.
XNO® technology demonstrates particular effectiveness in heavy-duty applications where rapid charging and long-term reliability are essential. The material’s composition results in a 51% lower global warming potential compared to traditional lithium titanate anodes, making it an environmentally responsible choice. Through partnership with CBMM, the world’s largest niobium producer, Echion operates a manufacturing facility in Brazil capable of producing 2,000 tonnes of XNO® material annually, equivalent to 1 GWh of lithium-ion cells.
Recent Projects
In early 2024, Echion Technologies secured £29 million in funding to accelerate the commercial adoption of its XNO® technology. The company also received an additional £10 million investment from Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital and BGF to support the production of commercially available cells using XNO® anode material. A significant milestone was reached with the inauguration of the world’s largest niobium-based anode production facility in Araxá, Brazil, marking the company’s expansion into large-scale manufacturing.
Investors
Echion Technologies has attracted substantial investment from notable organizations. The investor roster includes Volta Energy Technologies, which led the Series B round in 2024, along with CBMM, Business Growth Fund (BGF), and Cambridge Enterprise Ventures. Additional financial backing comes from Parkwalk Advisors and Barclays Sustainable Impact Capital, demonstrating strong market confidence in Echion’s technology and growth potential.
