Element 25 Limited is an Australian mining and technology company specializing in the production of high-purity manganese for electric vehicle batteries. The company operates the Butcherbird Manganese Mine in Western Australia and is developing a processing facility in Louisiana, USA. Through strategic partnerships with major automotive manufacturers like General Motors and Stellantis, Element 25 has established itself as a significant supplier of battery-grade manganese materials. The company’s focus on sustainable production methods and commitment to reducing carbon emissions positions it as an important contributor to the global electric vehicle supply chain.

Battery Technology

Element 25’s primary technological advancement is its proprietary process for manufacturing high-purity manganese sulphate monohydrate (HPMSM), an essential component in electric vehicle battery cathodes. This innovative process converts manganese concentrate from the Butcherbird Mine into battery-grade HPMSM through a series of refined processing steps. The technology is protected by international patents under the Patent Co-Operation Treaty.

The company’s HPMSM production process is designed to achieve the lowest reported carbon intensity worldwide, setting new standards for sustainable battery material manufacturing. The process generates reusable by-products that can be utilized in fertilizer and steel manufacturing, minimizing waste and enhancing resource efficiency. Element 25’s technology enables the production of manganese materials that meet strict quality requirements for electric vehicle batteries while maintaining cost-effectiveness throughout the supply chain.

Recent Projects

In 2024, Element 25 received approval for the expansion of the Butcherbird Manganese Mine from the Department of Mines, Industry Regulation and Safety. The company also secured a Title V Air Permit for its Louisiana HPMSM facility, supported by a US$166 million Department of Energy grant. Additional developments include process optimization at Butcherbird Mine, incorporating second-stage crushing systems, logwashing, and Dense Media Separation circuits to improve operational efficiency.
