Theion, a German company specializing in lithium-sulfur battery technology, has opened a representative office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), to facilitate its expansion in the Gulf region. The company aims to introduce its advanced battery technology to markets focused on energy innovation.

Theion’s approach differs from conventional lithium-ion batteries by utilizing sulfur, an abundant industrial byproduct of the region’s oil industry. This process reuses waste material while avoiding the environmental and social concerns associated with traditional battery components such as cobalt and nickel.

The significantly lower cost of sulfur compared to traditional battery materials allows theion to target a threefold increase in energy density while maintaining competitive pricing. The company’s technology is designed to meet growing demand in sectors such as electric aviation and other emerging applications.

The Dubai office will serve as a regional hub for developing partnerships with industry stakeholders, academic institutions and regulatory authorities throughout the Gulf region. This strategy aligns with regional initiatives for renewable energy and energy storage, and supports the emission reduction goals outlined at the COP28 climate conference.

Dr. Ulrich Ehmes, CEO of theion, cited the Gulf region’s focus on energy transition, favorable business environment, and sulfur availability as key factors in the company’s expansion decision. theion has been actively engaging with industry leaders in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the UAE since late 2023.

From its UAE base, theion plans to contribute to research and development collaborations with universities, optimize sourcing strategies with industry partners, and collaborate with established companies to scale up battery cell production. These efforts are expected to drive innovation, skills development and employment opportunities in support of the Gulf’s energy transition goals.
