Hyundai Motor Group is taking a significant step in electric vehicle (EV) innovation by establishing a pilot production line for next-generation all-solid-state batteries. According to industry sources on December 23, the company is finalizing preparations for the pilot line within its Next-Generation Battery Research Center at the Uiwang Research Institute in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea.

This facility is focused on developing technology for future mobility solutions. Equipment installation for individual processes is nearly complete, with only logistics automation facilities remaining. Full-scale operations are expected to commence in January of the coming year.

Hyundai announced plans to internalize next-generation battery technology in July 2022, focusing on the development of all-solid-state batteries at the new research center. The company aims to pilot electric vehicles equipped with these batteries by 2025 and begin mass production by 2030.

All-solid-state batteries represent a breakthrough in energy storage technology. By replacing the liquid electrolyte found in conventional lithium-ion batteries with a solid material, these batteries significantly reduce the risk of explosion or fire, enhancing safety. Additionally, their increased energy density improves driving performance and extends the range of electric vehicles.

The company plans to incorporate prototypes from the pilot line into its EVs for extensive testing, including real-world driving evaluations. The data gathered from these tests will inform future investment strategies for mass-production facilities. Hyundai’s pilot line is comparable in scale and sophistication to those of other industry leaders, such as Samsung SDI, which has been producing all-solid-state battery prototypes since mid-2023.

The Uiwang facility is designed to include advanced automation technologies, integrating robotics into manufacturing processes for enhanced efficiency and precision. This move positions Hyundai as a key player in the global EV market, as all-solid-state batteries are expected to become the standard for next-generation electric vehicles due to their superior safety features and performance advantages.

As Hyundai Motor Group prepares for the pilot production of all-solid-state batteries, the automotive industry moves closer to a future where electric vehicles are safer, more efficient, and more reliable. This initiative underscores Hyundai’s commitment to innovation and sustainability in mobility solutions, paving the way for significant advancements in the global EV landscape.
