Italvolt is establishing Italy’s first large-scale battery manufacturing facility, with plans to produce lithium-ion cells for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The company, founded by Lars Carlstrom, aims to create a 45 GWh production capacity facility spanning 300,000 m² in Scarmagno, Piedmont region. Set to open in 2025, this initiative will generate approximately 3,000 jobs while supporting Italy’s transition to sustainable energy solutions. The company’s strategic location in Northern Italy offers excellent connectivity to European markets and builds upon the nation’s industrial heritage, dating back to Alessandro Volta’s invention of the battery in 1800.
Battery Technology
Italvolt specializes in manufacturing next-generation lithium-ion cells in three distinct formats: pouch, prismatic (blade), and cylindrical. These cells incorporate nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) chemistry with silicon anodes, designed to meet various industrial requirements. The manufacturing process emphasizes efficiency and sustainability, with modular production lines that adapt to technological advancements.
Through collaboration with StoreDot, Italvolt has acquired licenses for Extreme Fast Charging (XFC) technology, enabling rapid charging capabilities comparable to traditional fuel filling times. The company’s research and development efforts also extend to solid-state battery technology, promising enhanced safety and performance characteristics. The facility’s annual production capacity will supply batteries for approximately 550,000 electric vehicles, industrial equipment, and grid storage applications.
Recent Projects
In 2024, Italvolt advanced its partnership with StoreDot to implement XFC technology in its production plans. The company also strengthened its collaboration with Politecnico di Milano for workforce development and technical innovation. Construction preparations at the Scarmagno site continue, with production scheduled to begin in 2025 and full-scale manufacturing expected by 2027-2028.
Investors
Italvolt has secured €20 million in funding from private equity firms, pension funds, and individual investors. Founder Lars Carlstrom has personally invested up to €5 million in the venture. While specific investor names remain undisclosed, the company maintains strategic partnerships with industry leaders including AECOM, ABB, Equans, and TÜV SÜD.
