German battery cell developer CustomCells and Austrian high-performance battery systems specialist KREISEL have announced a collaboration to develop two customized battery cell designs. One design will focus on achieving extremely high energy density, while the other will aim for an optimized total cost structure. KREISEL specializes in comprehensive electrification solutions, particularly in marine applications such as pleasure craft, commercial boats, and DNV vessels, as well as off-highway applications including construction and agricultural vehicles.
The joint project will address global supply chain considerations, material availability, technical and commercial risks, and assess the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of the cell designs. CustomCells will forecast the electrochemical performance and evaluate the electrochemical and thermal stability of the proposed cells. A risk analysis of cell development and mass production will also be conducted.
“Our objective with this collaboration is to identify the optimal battery cell for future applications while positively influencing cost structures and manufacturing strategies,” said Philipp Kreisel, Founder and Managing Director of KREISEL Electric. “Together with CustomCells, we are analyzing all requirements and conditions to determine the implications for the final cell. Key factors such as format, cell design, and chemistry are central considerations. We are experts in optimizing battery performance, and we are establishing a solid foundation at the cell level to ensure exceptional KREISEL performance and safety.”
“Our customers and our own standards demand the highest energy density, long lifespans, low costs, and maximum safety,” added Anna Stadler, Head of New Battery Technology at KREISEL. “In terms of cooling concepts and performance, we are already leading the way. Both KREISEL and CustomCells are pioneers in battery technology, and our expertise is highly complementary. It is a privilege to collaborate with a partner who truly understands our field.”
“The partnership with KREISEL allows us to demonstrate CustomCells’ adaptability and flexibility once again,” commented Dr. Dirk Abendroth, CEO of CustomCells. “Tailored solutions in development and manufacturing are our specialty. Niche markets such as off-highway vehicles are gaining increasing attention, and CustomCells is well-positioned to lead in this area.”
