KYBURZ Switzerland AG, founded in 1991 by CEO Martin Kyburz and headquartered in Freienstein-Teufen, Zurich, is Switzerland’s leading manufacturer of specialized electric vehicles (EVs). Built from humble beginnings as a small-scale enterprise, the privately held company has grown to deploy over 25,000 EVs worldwide, serving sectors such as postal and parcel delivery, industrial transport, and private mobility.

Focused on sustainable innovation, KYBURZ designs three-wheeled EVs for urban logistics and delivery services, electric scooters for individual users—including models adapted for mobility requirements—and advanced industrial vehicles. Its proprietary fleet management system optimizes battery performance and safety while reducing operational costs. Central to its mission is integrating a circular economy strategy into every facet of production and lifecycle management.

Battery Technology

KYBURZ prioritizes ethical and sustainable battery technology, using lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for its EVs to avoid controversial materials like cobalt and manganese. The company’s “Multi-Life” approach ensures batteries retain value through repeated uses: in their First Life, they power KYBURZ EVs; with reduced capacity, they enter Second Life in other vehicle applications; finally, degraded batteries are repurposed for Third Life uses, such as stationary energy storage systems for solar power grids.

To further close the battery loop, KYBURZ operates the LIBERTY recycling plant, established in 2020, which uses a chemical-free disassembly process to recover over 90% of raw materials, including cobalt-free materials and critical battery components. This direct recycling method supports a closed-loop system, minimizing reliance on virgin resources. Collaborating with institutions like Empa and the CircuBAT project consortium, KYBURZ continues to refine its recycling capabilities. The company aims to scale its recycling capacity and eventually spin off its recycling arm as a stand-alone entity, further extending its sustainability leadership.

Recent Projects

In the past year, KYBURZ has advanced its product lineup and sustainability initiatives. In October 2024, it launched the SmartBox system, an integrated logistics package featuring interchangeable cargo boxes with GPS tracking, solar panels, facial recognition access, and parcel management features. Designed to streamline urban deliveries, SmartBox debuted at the Amsterdam Parcel & Post EXPO. Later that year, KYBURZ partnered with Vitesco Technologies to industrialize its LFP battery recycling process, combining its expertise with Vitesco’s production automation.

By late 2024, development of its new DXC 3.0 EV model concluded, with production planned for mid-2025. Additionally, the company joined an autonomous last-mile logistics pilot in Bern with Planzer Parcel and LOXO. The project deploys self-driving delivery vehicles like the “Mathilde” ID.BUZZ van, which navigates autonomous routes using interchangeable cargo chassis, aligning with KYBURZ’s long-term vision of “City Logistics 2028.”

Investors

As a privately held company, KYBURZ Switzerland AG maintains sole ownership under its founder and CEO, Martin Kyburz. No other investors or financing partnerships beyond the founder have been publicly disclosed, enabling autonomous strategic direction in its EV and recycling operations.
