LG Energy Solution announced a definitive agreement with General Motors (GM) to jointly develop prismatic battery cell technology and related chemistries for GM’s future electric vehicles (EVs). This partnership extends the two companies’ successful 14-year collaboration in battery technology.

Under the agreement, the prismatic battery cells developed will be utilized in powering GM’s upcoming EV models. This milestone positions LG Energy Solution as the first global battery manufacturer to offer all three major cell form factors: pouch-type, cylindrical, and prismatic. The collaboration also highlights the robust partnership between LG Energy Solution and GM, building on the success of their Ultium Cells joint venture, which has created thousands of jobs in the United States with plants in Ohio and Tennessee.

Prismatic battery cells feature a flat, rectangular design with a rigid casing, allowing for efficient space utilization within battery modules and packs. LG Energy Solution brings extensive experience in prismatic cell production and holds a broad patent portfolio covering battery design and manufacturing technologies, including packaging. The company aims to leverage its advanced stacking technology, as industry manufacturing best practices shift from winding to stacking in prismatic cell structures. By capitalizing on its expertise in materials and manufacturing, LG Energy Solution intends to deliver differentiated prismatic solutions to meet the evolving needs of automotive customers.

With the addition of prismatic cells to its portfolio, LG Energy Solution will strengthen its market leadership alongside its existing pouch-type and cylindrical cells. This expanded product lineup enables the company to offer efficient and safe power solutions tailored to various EV segments, supporting the global acceleration of EV adoption.

“LG Energy Solution is proud to be expanding its relationship with one of its strongest partners, GM. Together with GM, we’ve made tremendous progress already and look forward to deepening our collaboration to drive the right chemistry and battery combinations for continued growth in the EV market,” said Wonjoon Suh, Executive Vice President and head of the company’s Advanced Automotive Battery division.

“Together with LG Energy Solution, we’ve built Ultium Cells into one of the largest battery cell manufacturers in North America, creating thousands of advanced technology jobs in the U.S. and powering our diverse EV portfolio,” said Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery cell and pack. “We’re focused on optimizing our battery technology by developing the right battery chemistries and form factors to improve EV performance, enhance safety, and reduce costs. By extending our partnership with LG Energy Solution, we’re taking an important step towards these goals,” said Kurt Kelty, GM vice president of battery cell and pack.
