LG Energy Solution announced today that its subsidiary, LG Energy Solution Arizona, has secured a supply agreement with U.S.-based automotive manufacturer Rivian. Over the course of more than five years, LG Energy Solution will provide Rivian with 67GWh of advanced 4695 cylindrical batteries.
The 4695 cylindrical battery, measuring 46 mm in diameter and 95 mm in height, is a next-generation cell recognized for its extended range and high safety standards. Boasting over six times the capacity of existing 2170 cylindrical batteries, its larger size offers higher energy density, improved space efficiency, and enhanced safety features, drawing significant industry attention.
Production of the batteries will take place at LG Energy Solution’s dedicated facility in Arizona. The cells will be delivered to Rivian’s manufacturing plant in Normal, Illinois, and will be utilized in the R2 model targeted at the North American market.
“Due to the dynamic nature of the current EV market, an increasing number of global automakers are demonstrating a strong preference for a diverse range of battery form factors,” said David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution. “This large-scale order from Rivian for 4695 batteries marks a key milestone for LG Energy Solution in expanding its client base within the cylindrical battery segment.”
With over 20 years of experience in cylindrical battery technology, supported by extensive manufacturing expertise and a broad patent portfolio, LG Energy Solution continues to strengthen its position in the U.S. market. The agreement aligns with the company’s strategy to actively respond to the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) by developing and supplying competitive battery cells promptly while expanding into new markets.
Given the strong interest from automakers in its 46-series cylindrical batteries, LG Energy Solution anticipates further extending its leadership in this growing sector.
