LG Energy Solution (LGES) has announced the availability of its new system-on-chip (SoC)-based battery management system (BMS) diagnostic solutions for the automotive industry. The advanced BMS software will be featured on Qualcomm Technologies, Inc.’s Snapdragon Digital Chassis™, marking a significant collaboration between the two companies aimed at accelerating the commercialization of SoC-based BMS diagnostic solutions.
This partnership builds upon a prior agreement where LGES and Qualcomm Technologies formed a technical consortium to develop next-generation BMS diagnostic solutions for electric vehicles (EVs). The BMS software will also integrate with the Snapdragon Car-to-Cloud Connected Services Platform, providing automakers with enhanced diagnostic capabilities for human-machine interface (HMI) and cloud services.
LGES’s new BMS solution is the industry’s first to leverage high-performance SoC computing power, departing from conventional BMS that operate on low-spec hardware. This advancement allows for significantly enhanced safety diagnostics and more precise degradation and lifespan prediction functions. By utilizing the increased computing power of the Snapdragon Digital Chassis, the BMS can collect and analyze more data than traditional systems, enabling faster and more accurate detection of anomalies such as thermal incidents.
The enhanced compute capabilities result in an over 80-fold increase in processing power compared to previous BMS solutions. This improvement enables the implementation of complex algorithms for predicting battery residual capacity and assessing degradation performance indicators for specific battery components like the anode and cathode. Additionally, the advanced BMS diagnostic software operates in real-time without requiring a separate server connection, allowing for immediate analysis and diagnosis of vehicle data within the vehicle itself.
The announcement aligns with LGES’s strategic focus on expanding into software and services, as outlined in its recent corporate vision. The company has launched a new brand, ‘B.around,’ offering comprehensive solutions that extend beyond traditional BMS capabilities. By integrating cloud and artificial intelligence technologies, ‘B.around’ provides advanced safety diagnostics, degradation and lifespan prediction software, and solutions for software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
David Kim, CEO of LG Energy Solution, commented on the collaboration: “It is very meaningful that we have opened the market for the industry’s first SoC-based BMS, which will be key to the electric vehicle era, together with a global automotive technology leader like Qualcomm Technologies. We believe that many EVs will soon be able to experience differentiated customer value through our B.around brand.”
O.H. Kwon, senior vice president and president of Qualcomm APAC, added: “We are very pleased to collaborate with LG Energy Solution on the commercialization development of BMS diagnostic solutions for next-generation electric vehicles based on the technological capabilities of the Snapdragon Digital Chassis. Qualcomm is driving the acceleration of digital transformation in the automotive sector, and through this collaboration, we aim to innovate the way energy is utilized and managed in electric vehicles to achieve optimal safety.”
