Li-S Energy Limited has announced substantial advancements in its lithium-sulfur battery technology, achieving impressive energy density metrics. From its Phase 3 automated pouch cell production facility, the company has successfully produced full-size 10Ah semi-solid-state cells, which delivered an energy density of 498Wh/kg on the first discharge and an industry-leading 456 Wh/kg after formation cycling. Ongoing testing indicates that the cells continue to perform well during subsequent cycles.

The enhanced energy density is particularly advantageous for sectors where weight is critical, such as drones, defense, and electric aviation. This improvement allows for lighter batteries, which can enhance range, payload, and operational time for partner products.

The cells that have achieved these performance metrics utilize the LI-S GEN3 semi-solid-state cell chemistry, which has been under continuous development since its announcement in April 2023. In September, the company delivered test cells to its initial key partners to assess performance for aerospace battery packs, integrating both LIS cells and a newly developed intelligent battery management system.

Mr. Mark Xavier, CEO of Li-S Energy partner V-TOL Aerospace, remarked on the significance of this milestone, stating that the performance has exceeded expectations for their joint development of the Pegasus uncrewed air system. He noted that this level of cell performance is likely to attract substantial global interest and opportunities across the drone, aerospace, and defense sectors.

Dr. Steve Rowlands, Chief Technology Officer of Li-S Energy, emphasized that these results mark a crucial breakthrough in lithium-sulfur chemistry. He noted that achieving 456 Wh/kg from 10 Ah cells post-formation positions Li-S Energy at the forefront of lithium-sulfur technology. Unlike many research institutions that report initial discharge results from smaller cells, Li-S Energy adopts a pragmatic approach by testing larger cells produced on its automated production line, providing a more accurate representation of performance in practical applications.

Dr. Lee Finniear, CEO of Li-S Energy, stated that this achievement is a pivotal moment for the emerging lithium-sulfur battery industry. He highlighted the necessity for high-energy density, reliable cell production, and scalability as crucial factors for their partners in the aerospace, drone, and defense industries. The company has focused on meeting these needs by establishing Australia’s largest pouch cell production facility, designed for gigawatt-hour production capabilities.

With the Phase 3 production line now operational, Li-S Energy is engaged in continuous development efforts to further enhance cell reliability and production efficiency. The battery integration team is also collaborating with partners to refine battery management systems and battery pack designs, anticipating additional partnerships in the coming months.
