LOHUM, India’s largest producer of sustainable critical minerals, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with ReElement Technologies Corporation and American Metals LLC to establish the United States’ first fully integrated lithium-ion battery recycling, repurposing, and critical material production facility. The joint venture represents an initial investment exceeding $30 million and is expected to create 250 green jobs.

Located at the Marion Advanced Technology Center in Indiana, the facility will have a capacity of 15.5 GWh and aims to supply over 315,000 electric vehicles annually, contingent on feedstock availability. The end-to-end facility will encompass the entire value chain—from battery cell testing and segregation for second-life energy storage applications to recycling, mineral refining, engineered materials, and production of battery-grade products with purity levels exceeding 99.5%.

The partnership leverages LOHUM’s expertise in battery material recycling and extraction technology and ReElement’s modular, adaptable mineral processing technology. By combining their capabilities, the joint venture aims to reduce capital expenditure, physical footprint, environmental impact, and operational costs associated with the separation and purification of battery materials.

“As LOHUM expands its presence in North America, we welcome this opportunity to partner with ReElement and American Metals, companies that share our goal of making battery materials last forever,” said Rajat Verma, Founder and CEO of LOHUM. “We believe the joint venture will be instrumental in building resilient critical material supply chains in the U.S. that can sustain themselves through circularity.”

Mark Jensen, Chairman of American Metals and ReElement Technologies, added, “We have been working with LOHUM to leverage our unique capabilities and world-leading technologies. We are pleased to partner in a joint venture to capitalize on our vast experience in recycling lithium-ion batteries.”

The facility plans to expand to other locations as determined by the joint venture parties. This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to developing North America’s lithium-based battery manufacturing supply chain.
