Lucid Group, Inc. and Panasonic Energy Co., Ltd. have announced that the upcoming Lucid Gravity Grand Touring SUV will utilize Panasonic Energy’s latest-generation lithium-ion EV battery cells. This collaboration aims to deliver an SUV that combines outstanding range, performance, and interior space, enabled by advanced battery technology.

The Lucid Gravity Grand Touring is set to offer an EPA-estimated range of up to 450 miles, utilizing a battery pack that is up to 40% smaller than those of competitors. This remarkable efficiency is partially attributed to Panasonic Energy’s high-performing 2170 cylindrical lithium-ion battery cells, which boast an energy density exceeding 800 watt-hours per liter—an industry-leading achievement. Developed through a close partnership with Lucid, these next-generation cells meet exceptional standards for fast charging, safety, longevity, and performance.

As a new class of SUV, the Lucid Gravity provides the interior space and practicality of a full-size SUV with up to 120 cubic feet of total usable cargo space, all within the exterior footprint of a mid-size SUV. The vehicle offers sophisticated seating for up to seven adults, delivering both versatility and an unparalleled driving experience. The Gravity Grand Touring model features 828 horsepower and can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in under 3.5 seconds.

Panasonic Energy, a global leader in lithium-ion batteries, has supplied approximately 15 billion EV battery cells worldwide as of December 2023, equivalent to powering three million electric vehicles without any recalls due to battery-related issues. This record underscores the company’s commitment to quality and safety.

The partnership between Panasonic Energy and Lucid was established through several multi-year agreements in 2022. Panasonic’s batteries have been successfully integrated into the award-winning Lucid Air Pure, prompting their adoption in the Gravity models. Production of the Lucid Gravity Grand Touring, starting at $94,900, began in December 2024 at Lucid’s vertically integrated factory in Arizona. The Lucid Gravity Touring, starting at $79,900 and planned for late 2025, will also utilize Panasonic’s 2170 batteries. These battery cells are currently produced in Japan, with future production expected at Panasonic’s new facility in Kansas.

Peter Rawlinson, CEO of Lucid, stated, “Through our advanced technology and collaboration with Panasonic, we have achieved this with an impressively small battery pack compared to competitors. This is critical to preserving earth’s precious resources, and I look forward to our continued work with Panasonic as we further sustainable mobility for the benefit of all.”

Kazuo Tadanobu, CEO of Panasonic Energy, commented, “By combining our high-performance, high-energy density cells with Lucid’s technology, we have been able to utilize the unique characteristics of our cylindrical cells, resulting in an SUV with unparalleled performance and range. This underscores our continued efforts in aiming to set new standards in the EV industry and contributing to a sustainable society.”
