Morrow Batteries and Bergen Carbon Solutions (BCS) have signed a memorandum of understanding to establish a partnership focused on developing a sustainable, localized supply chain for critical battery materials in Europe. The collaboration aims to support Morrow’s battery cell production by creating a European value chain for critical carbon materials.
The partnership will explore the potential to establish a local supply of green carbon from BCS for Morrow’s battery cell production in Norway. In addition, the companies plan to develop solutions that could enhance the technical capabilities of Morrow’s batteries using BCS materials.
This initiative is intended to provide Morrow with an alternative to existing global supply chains, which are predominantly controlled by non-European companies. The use of BCS products is expected to help reduce CO2 emissions in the battery manufacturing process.
Lars Christian Bacher, CEO of Morrow, stated that high quality, tailor-made carbon products from BCS’ CO2-consuming production process could become a valuable asset for the Norwegian battery industry.
Odd Strømsnes, CEO of BCS, noted that future regulations may require the use of sustainable carbon materials in battery production, in line with the sustainability criteria of the EU Battery Regulation. The collaboration aims to reduce the carbon footprint of battery material streams while increasing the security of the European supply chain.
Both companies see this partnership as a potential first step in developing a broader sustainable battery value chain in Norway and Europe, potentially strengthening the region’s position in the global battery market.
