Morrow Batteries and the State Agency for Energy Efficiency and Energy Saving of Ukraine (SAEE) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the potential supply of LFP battery cells for energy storage systems in Ukraine. The agreement aims to strengthen Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, which has been affected by the ongoing conflict.
Ukraine is seeking to establish a distributed battery energy storage system (BESS) grid to provide more reliable power to its population. The potential agreement with Morrow Batteries could involve deliveries in the GWh range, with exact volumes to be determined.
Morrow Batteries plans to manufacture the LFP battery cells at its facilities in Arendal, Norway, including the recently opened cell factory and the upcoming Eyde I Gigafactory. Deliveries could potentially begin in the first quarter of 2025, subject to finalization of a firm purchase agreement.
The initiative is in line with Ukraine’s efforts to improve energy security, including a government directive to install energy storage in schools and hospitals across the country. The final contract may involve various stakeholders, including external financiers, research institutions and government agencies.
In response to geopolitical challenges and the global shift towards renewable energy sources, this development reflects the growing demand for European-made battery solutions. Both parties have expressed their commitment to expedite the agreement process given the urgency of Ukraine’s energy needs.
