Swedish battery manufacturer Northvolt has announced the relocation of its lithium metal battery technology development from California to Sweden. The company will integrate its research and development activities at the Northvolt Labs campus in Västerås, Sweden.
The objective of this move is the consolidation of Northvolt’s research and development efforts and the acceleration of the industrialization of its cell product portfolio. Northvolt aims to create an environment conducive to cross-innovation and accelerated development by co-locating lithium-ion, sodium-ion and lithium-metal technologies.

According to Sami Haikala, Northvolt’s Chief Development Officer, this consolidation will enhance the company’s ability to deliver advanced energy solutions in response to increasing global market demands.
Northvolt Labs, which began operating in 2019, includes more than 20,000 square meters of manufacturing space, with an additional 15,000 square meters currently under development. The facility employs more than 1,000 people, including materials engineers, cell designers and manufacturing specialists.
As a result of this transition, Northvolt will cease operations at its Cuberg site in the San Francisco Bay Area. Shauna McIntyre, CEO of Cuberg, will maintain a leadership position within Northvolt North America to facilitate the company’s regional expansion initiatives.
