Safion GmbH is a German technology company specializing in advanced battery diagnostics. Founded in 2019 by four engineers from RWTH Aachen University, the company develops solutions that maximize battery performance throughout their lifecycle. Their expertise stems from over a decade of interdisciplinary research at RWTH Aachen, where the founding team developed innovative methods for battery analysis and assessment. The company serves clients across the entire battery value chain, from manufacturers to end-users, providing tools for quality assurance, lifespan forecasting, state evaluation, and second-life testing.

Battery Technology

Safion’s technology centers on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), combined with sophisticated assessment algorithms. Their product portfolio includes two main series: ExaMight and Inspectrum. The ExaMight series offers automated testing systems for efficient battery cell sorting and quality assurance, capable of processing large volumes of cells quickly. These systems can evaluate up to 32 impedance points simultaneously, providing accurate assessments of cell lifetime performance.

The Inspectrum series focuses on high-speed EIS measurements for battery cell and system development. This technology enables real-time monitoring of internal processes during charging and discharging, offering precise insights into battery behavior. Both systems support all types of lithium-ion and sodium-ion batteries, making them versatile tools for various applications.

Safion’s software solutions, including Inspectrum.Suite and ExaMight.Cockpit, provide automated test sequences and data evaluation. These tools reduce human error and operational costs while maintaining high accuracy in battery testing and analysis.

Recent Projects

In 2023, Safion established a strategic partnership with Digatron Power Electronics GmbH, a leading supplier of battery test and formation systems. This collaboration enhances Safion’s global distribution capabilities and integrates their diagnostic tools with Digatron’s battery cyclers. The company has also expanded its operations, moving into larger facilities in Aachen to accommodate growing demand for their battery diagnostic solutions.

Investors

A significant investment came from Rolf Beckers, founder and owner of Digatron Power Electronics GmbH, who invested a seven-digit sum in Safion during 2022. This investment strengthened the strategic partnership between both companies and supported Safion’s expansion plans. Additional investor information is not publicly available.
