Samsung SDI and General Motors have formalized an agreement to form a joint venture focused on electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing in the United States. This development follows initial discussions announced in April last year.

The joint venture includes a $3.5 billion investment to build a battery cell manufacturing facility in New Carlisle, Indiana. The facility is designed to have an initial annual production capacity of 27 gigawatt hours (GWh), with the potential to expand to 36 GWh. Operations are expected to begin in 2027.

The collaboration is expected to create more than 1,600 jobs and contribute to the local economy. The manufacturing complex will be located on a 680-acre site in New Carlisle.

The facility will specialize in the production of nickel-rich prismatic batteries using Nickel Cobalt Aluminum (NCA) technology. These batteries are designed to provide extended range through increased energy density and enhanced safety features. They are intended for use in future General Motors electric vehicle models.

The partnership aims to establish a significant presence in the U.S. EV battery market. It represents a strategic alignment with the evolving market dynamics in the electric vehicle sector, allowing Samsung SDI to expand its North American market presence and supporting General Motors’ efforts to maintain a leading position in EV production.

Both companies expect to further expand their collaboration, reflecting a shared focus on the growth potential of the electric vehicle market.
