Sigma Lithium is modifying its expansion plans to align with current lithium market dynamics, as revealed by CEO Ana Cabral in a recent interview with Fastmarkets. The company is adopting a more measured approach to growth compared to its initial production acceleration.
At its Grota do Cirilo operation in Brazil, Sigma has extended the timeline for its Phase 2 expansion. The company now projects a 12-15 month implementation period, an increase from the original 9-month schedule. This adjustment reflects a transition from an aggressive growth strategy to a more deliberate approach.
Sigma Lithium’s Long-Term Growth Strategy Remain Intact
Cabral stated that while Sigma remains committed to expansion, it is synchronizing its pace with market conditions. The company has allocated funds for accelerated growth should market circumstances improve, allowing for strategic flexibility.
Despite the revised timeline, Sigma continues to advance its expansion plans. Phase 2 is expected to increase concentrate capacity to 520,000 tonnes annually, nearly doubling current output. A subsequent Phase 3 expansion aims to further boost production to 766,000 tonnes per year of concentrate.
The Grota do Cirilo project, which commenced commercial production in April 2023, currently yields 270,000 tonnes of lithium concentrate annually. Sigma emphasizes the operation’s sustainability features, including hydropower utilization and water recycling systems.
Cabral indicated that Sigma is exploring opportunities for downstream integration into lithium chemical production. This strategy aims to leverage the company’s existing production capabilities and sustainability practices.
While adapting to current market conditions, Sigma Lithium maintains its long-term objective of establishing a significant lithium production center in Brazil. The company continues to position itself as a key contributor to the global lithium supply chain.
