StoreDot, a prominent developer of extreme fast charging (XFC) technology, has entered into a licensing agreement with Kumyang, a leading Korean battery manufacturer, to mass-produce XFC cylindrical cells. This partnership represents a crucial advancement in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology, leveraging StoreDot’s innovative XFC capabilities alongside Kumyang’s expertise in cylindrical cell manufacturing, particularly focusing on the 4680 cell format.

The collaboration aims to produce EV batteries capable of charging from 10% to 80% in just 10 minutes. These XFC cylindrical cells are designed to offer high energy density exceeding 800 Wh/L and a cycle life surpassing 1,000 standard charge cycles. This combination of rapid charging, enhanced energy density, and longevity addresses significant challenges in EV adoption, particularly charging anxiety, by significantly reducing the time required to recharge vehicles without compromising on range.

This licensing agreement marks the first instance of XFC technology being mass-produced in cylindrical form, thereby expanding the options available to EV manufacturers. The partnership builds on a prior joint program where StoreDot and Kumyang worked together to optimize cell design at Kumyang’s facilities, resulting in a balanced battery that meets the demands of fast charging and high energy storage.

Dr. Doron Myersdorf, CEO of StoreDot, highlighted the importance of this agreement, stating, “This license agreement is an important milestone for StoreDot that will make our XFC technology available in the cylindrical format, in addition to the pouch and prismatic formats currently available.” Meanwhile, Kumyang’s CEO, Ryu Kwanghyun, highlighted the partnership’s impact: “This collaboration aligns perfectly with our commitment to delivering cutting-edge battery solutions that empower the widespread adoption of electric vehicles.”

StoreDot is pursuing its ambitious ‘100inX’ roadmap, which aims to enable charging of 100 miles of range in 5 minutes by 2024, with a further reduction to 3 minutes planned by 2028. Kumyang’s manufacturing capabilities are expected to ensure the efficient market introduction of these innovations. Together, StoreDot and Kumyang are setting new standards for EV batteries, making fast and reliable charging more accessible for consumers and contributing to the global transition towards sustainable transportation.

This development not only benefits the electric vehicle industry by enhancing battery performance and user convenience but also supports broader environmental goals by promoting the reduction of carbon emissions through advanced energy storage solutions.
