The United Kingdom’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) has begun operation in North Yorkshire. The Lakeside Energy Park, a 100 MW facility located in Drax near Selby, can supply electricity to around 30,000 homes daily across England and Wales.
Battery energy storage systems like this one are designed to store energy from renewable sources such as wind and solar power. They release stored energy when demand is highest, ensuring a consistent and reliable supply.
Mark Selvaratnam, the project manager for Lakeside Energy Park, emphasized the significant role the facility will play in the nation’s transition to clean energy. He stated that the energy park will be instrumental in helping the government meet its target of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
Mr. Selvaratnam said Lakeside Energy Park would play “a vital role” in helping the government meet its target. “When the sun is shining, and the wind is blowing, and we have excess supply, batteries can soak that up and store it,” he said. “Then, at a later time, we can release that back and get round-the-clock renewable energy.”
