Vianode, an advanced battery materials company, has reported significant advancements in securing project financing for its planned synthetic graphite plant in North America. Euler Hermes AG, the export credit agency representing the German Government, has issued a Letter of Interest confirming Vianode’s eligibility for a loan guarantee of up to USD 300 million.

The proposed North American facility is designed to achieve an initial annual production capacity of approximately 70,000 tons of synthetic graphite, with operations expected to commence in the second half of 2027. This plant represents a multi-billion-dollar investment, with the loan guarantee from Euler Hermes AG allocated towards the procurement of essential production equipment.

Howard Ormonroyd, CFO of Vianode, stated, “The endorsement from Euler Hermes AG is an important step in establishing the overall funding for Vianode’s synthetic graphite plant in North America. It complements multiple advanced discussions with export credit agencies, commercial banks, and stakeholders within the battery and EV value chain to ensure robust project financing of our facility, which will provide local supply of anode graphite. Today, this critical battery material is manufactured at scale almost exclusively in Asia.”

In addition to the financing progress, Vianode has entered into a multi-billion-dollar long-term supply agreement with General Motors, securing the provision of EV battery-grade anode graphite through 2033. The company is also finalizing the site selection process for the plant near the U.S.-Canadian automotive cluster and is actively developing its local project organization.

Anode graphite is the largest component by weight in lithium-ion batteries and plays a crucial role in battery and electric vehicle supply chains. Vianode’s synthetic anode graphite is produced with a 90% lower CO2 footprint compared to conventional methods. Unlike natural graphite, which is mined from carbon-rich rock formations, synthetic graphite is manufactured through high-temperature production processes.

Vianode is currently manufacturing anode graphite solutions at Via ONE, its first full-scale production plant in Herøya, Norway, which commenced operations in 2024, and at its industrial pilot plant in Kristiansand, Norway, since 2021. Additionally, Vianode’s Technology Center in Kristiansand became operational in 2022.
