Chinese electric two-wheeler manufacturer Yadea has announced the integration of sodium-ion batteries in its electric scooters, marking a significant development in their product offerings. This new technology is featured in four models, priced between 3,299 and 4,299 yuan (approximately $450 to $590).

The announcement was made during the CES event in Las Vegas. Yadea claims that the sodium-ion batteries provide enhanced safety, environmental benefits, and extended lifespans compared to conventional lithium batteries. They also highlight the improved charging capabilities of these batteries, stating that users can achieve an 80% charge in just 15 minutes, thanks to the HuaYu Sodium Superfast Charging Ecosystem.

Yadea emphasizes the accessibility of the materials used in their new batteries and cites the extensive testing conducted, which included over 20 safety assessments to ensure the batteries are resistant to fire and explosion under extreme conditions like punctures and compression. The specifications of the sodium-ion batteries include an energy density of 145 Wh/kg and a lifespan of up to 1,500 cycles at room temperature, which could translate to durability for up to five years. Furthermore, at temperatures as low as -20°C, the battery maintains a discharge retention rate of over 92%, with an expected range of approximately 70 kilometers.

The company’s battery ecosystem also features a battery swapping option, supported by a newly established subsidiary named Huayu JiNa Supercharging Ecosystem, which will concentrate on sodium-ion battery development. This initiative will include the deployment of “supercharging” stations capable of diagnosing battery status and securing defective units. However, details regarding the impact of this new subsidiary on Yadea’s existing battery swap partnership with Gogoro remain unspecified. In collaboration with DCJ, Yadea and Gogoro previously launched a partnered brand in 2021 called Huan Huan.
