ABB and Škoda Group have entered into a partnership to supply battery-electric multiple units (BEMUs) for the Czech national railway operator, České dráhy. This collaboration marks a significant advancement in railway electrification, with ABB providing its Traction Battery Pro Series for Škoda’s new fleet of BEMUs.
The initial order, valued at under $20 million and recorded in the fourth quarter of 2024, includes 195 Pro 8C-850 battery packs designated for 15 BEMUs. The agreement also encompasses a 15-year service contract, ensuring ongoing support and maintenance for the battery technology.
The ABB Pro Series battery packs are designed to enhance sustainable rail transport, particularly in regions with partially electrified railway networks. This technology enables trains to transition smoothly between electrified and non-electrified tracks, offering a viable alternative to complete infrastructure electrification while reducing carbon emissions.
