AM Batteries, a leader in dry battery-electrode technology based in Billerica, Massachusetts, has been named to TIME Magazine’s list of the Best Inventions of 2024. The company received recognition in the Manufacturing and Materials category for its innovative Powder to Electrode dry-coating method.

The annual list by TIME highlights 200 groundbreaking innovations worldwide that are changing lives. AM Batteries’ technology replaces traditional solvent-based slurry-coating methods by spraying dry active material directly onto current collectors to form battery electrodes. This process eliminates the need for toxic solvents and energy-intensive drying, reducing the energy consumption and carbon footprint of battery plants by more than 40%—and up to 75% in electrode manufacturing alone. It also cuts capital expenditures by up to 40% and operational costs by over 50%.

“It is an honor to be included in this year’s TIME Best Inventions,” said Lie Shi, CEO of AM Batteries. “Our vision has always been to enable cheaper and cleaner batteries. This recognition validates the work our team and partners have done to shape the future of the battery industry.”

The technology is compatible with current battery materials and is adaptable to future chemistries like sodium-ion and solid-state batteries. Unlike other manufacturing methods limited to thick or thin electrodes, AM Batteries’ process allows producers to optimize energy and power according to specific needs.

TIME Magazine evaluated contenders based on originality, efficacy, ambition, and impact. The full list of the Best Inventions of 2024 can be viewed at time.com/best-inventions-2024.
