According to data published July 4 by SNE Research, worldwide battery installations in battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and hybrids (HEVs) outside China rose 26.0% year-on-year through May 2025, reaching 169.3 gigawatt-hours (GWh). During the same interval, the combined share of South Korea’s three major battery suppliers—LG Energy Solution, SK On and Samsung SDI—declined by 6.1 percentage points to 39.2% of the non-Chinese market.

LG Energy Solution retained second place globally, recording a 13.0% increase in battery deployment to 36.5 GWh. SK On moved into third place with a 17.9% rise to 16.8 GWh. In contrast, Samsung SDI fell to fourth place as its volume slipped 8.5% to 13.1 GWh, a downturn SNE Research attributed to reduced orders from key European and North American automakers. Panasonic of Japan, which supplies cells to Tesla, ranked sixth with 11.7 GWh, down 12.9%.
Chinese producers accounted for five of the top ten suppliers outside China, led by Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL). CATL increased its battery shipments by 36.7% to 50.4 GWh, securing a 29.8% market share. The company serves both domestic automakers and global customers including Tesla, BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen. BYD climbed to fifth place on a 142.9% surge in battery usage, a performance SNE Research linked to its vertically integrated production model and competitive pricing of lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cells.
“Sustained expansion by Chinese battery and automotive manufacturers through entry into emerging markets and partnerships with European OEMs is reshaping the global supply landscape,” SNE Research commented. The firm noted that Korean suppliers must address evolving policy frameworks and intensifying competition from low-cost Chinese entrants to protect their market positions.
