BYD Leads China’s April NEV Market as Tesla Drops to Eighth

BYD retained its spot as China’s leading NEV manufacturer in April 2025, selling 268,778 units and capturing a 29.7% market share. Meanwhile, Tesla fell to eighth place with 28,731 sales, marking an 8.6% year-over-year decline, according to CPCA rankings.

BYD retained its position as the leading new energy vehicle (NEV) manufacturer in China for April 2025, while Tesla experienced a decline in its market standing. According to the latest rankings from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), BYD achieved retail sales of 268,778 NEVs in April, marking a 5.8% increase compared to the same month last year. This performance secured BYD a 29.7% market share, slightly up from March’s 29.3%, though below April 2024’s 37.5%.

In contrast, Tesla’s retail sales in China fell to 28,731 units in April, representing an 8.6% decrease year-over-year. Tesla’s market share dropped to 3.2%, placing it eighth in the Chinese NEV market for the month. This is a significant decline from its previous position as the third-largest NEV maker in March, where it held a 7.5% share.

Geely maintained the second spot in the April rankings with a 13.1% market share and reported retail sales of 118,813 NEVs, which is a substantial 141.7% increase from April 2024. Other noteworthy positions include Li Auto at sixth place with 33,939 units sold and a 3.8% share, Xpeng at seventh with 31,343 units and a 3.5% share, Xiaomi EV ninth with 28,585 units and a 3.2% share, and Leapmotor tenth with 28,317 units and a 3.1% share.

For the January-April period, BYD led the Chinese NEV market with a total of 964,940 units sold, accounting for 29.0% of the market. Geely followed with 440,592 units and a 13.3% share, while Changan Automobile ranked third with 217,182 units and a 6.5% share. Tesla held the fifth position in the same period, selling 163,338 units and capturing a 4.9% market share.

In the broader passenger car market, which includes traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, BYD also secured the top position with a 15.3% share in April. Geely was second with 209,979 units sold and a 12.0% share, followed by FAW-Volkswagen in third place with 110,506 units and a 6.3% share. Additionally, the sales of Tesla’s Model Y in China reached 101,873 units from January to April, reflecting a 19.61% decrease compared to the previous year.
