Chery, a leading Chinese automotive manufacturer, revealed at the Chery Global Innovation Conference on October 18 that it plans to launch an all-solid-state battery by 2026. Alongside this announcement, the company introduced its new Kunpeng battery brand, featuring three battery series capable of 6C ultra-fast charging—which can add 400 km of range in just five minutes.

The solid-state battery roadmap outlines achieving an energy density of 400 Wh/kg this year, increasing to 600 Wh/kg by 2025, with the first automotive applications expected in 2026. Batch production is slated for 2027, and Chery claims this technology will enable electric vehicles (EVs) to achieve ranges up to 1,500 km.

The Kunpeng battery lineup includes pouch lithium iron phosphate (LFP), pouch ternary, and cylindrical ternary batteries. A notable feature is their ability to support charging rates up to 6C, significantly reducing charging times.

The Kunpeng batteries are designed for longevity, capable of more than 3,000 charging cycles, and feature a multi-section energy-absorbing design that supports rapid directional pressure relief within one second. Chery demonstrated the resilience of these batteries by showing that a cell with a cut corner could still function.

These batteries are expected to be integrated into Chery’s new energy vehicles (NEVs) in the coming months. In September, Chery’s NEV sales exceeded 60,000 units out of a total of 244,534 vehicles sold. Yin Tongyue, chairman of Chery Automobile Co., Ltd., stated that NEV sales are projected to reach 80,000 units this month and 100,000 by the end of the year.
